“Blasphemous 2” retains the core elements of the previous game and provides a 2D side-scrolling metroidvania action-adventure experience. Players take on the role of the Penitent, a silent knight tasked with preventing the return of the curse known as “The Miracle.” This part of the game’s story takes place after the events of the “Wounds Of Evenside” update to the original game.

Much like its predecessor, the game world is filled with dangerous traps, challenging platforming sections, powerful enemies, and boss encounters. However, players will also interact with a variety of non-playable characters who can offer assistance or give them engaging side quests.

Desecration 2 introduces a series of new weapons, each with unique attributes such as range, attack speed, special abilities, and skill trees. Weapon selection includes options like the War Censer, which delivers a slow and powerful attack; the Rapier and Dagger, a dual-wield combination that deals rapid damage; and the Prayer Blade, a versatile weapon that combines the best features of its class. These weapons are not only used in combat, but also aid exploration by helping players discover new routes and solve environmental puzzles.

Customization extends to the protagonist’s abilities. Players can equip up to five “rosaries,” which are passive items that provide bonuses to the character. Additionally, players have access to two active spells throughout the game, called prayers. The addition of statues further enhances customization. These statues grant minor buffs individually and more significant boosts when placed together in specific combinations.

Blasphemous 2 was developed by Spanish studio The Game Kitchen and is back for a sequel. As producer David Erosa said, one of the team’s main goals is to align the game more closely with the traditional Metroidvania genre.

To achieve this goal, the development team focused on expanding the arsenal of weapons available to the Penitent, thereby enhancing combat capabilities and improving the character’s ability to navigate the game world. It’s worth noting that the team chose not to reuse any code from the original game. Instead, they spent 18 months rebuilding Blasphemous 2’s code from scratch.

The team also invested time in refining the game’s controls, responding to player feedback and criticism of the original game. Development continues to draw inspiration from painting, Spanish culture, history, and architecture, just like the original game.

With the joint efforts of The Game Kitchen and publisher Team17, “Blasphemous 2” will be officially released in April 2023. The game was released digitally on August 24, 2023, for Series X and Series S platforms such as Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.

Fans can expect a physical version of the game to launch on September 15, 2023. Additionally, players have the option to purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes a digital art book and official soundtrack.
