Development of “Pacific Drive” began in 2019 under the direction of creative director Alexander Draatt, who came up with the idea while traveling through the Olympic Peninsula. Initially considering independent development, Dracot founded Ironwood Studios and assembled a team during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The game was announced in September 2022 and released on February 22, 2024 for PlayStation 5 and Windows. The game received positive reviews, praising its immersive atmosphere, engaging characters, and detailed vehicle customization. However, some critics pointed out its repetitive gameplay and challenging difficulty.

In Pacific Drive, splitting the stack isn’t as simple as in other games, but there are ways to do it. The traditional split-stack approach does not work in Pacific Drive, but alternatives exist.

  • One way to do this is to use storage bins in the trunk of your car. After the car is repaired and the storage box is installed, transfer the items you want to separate into the storage box.
  • Then, press Shift and right-click on the item to move just one item to the backpack. This allows you to split your stack and manage your inventory more efficiently.
  • Another way to split a stack in Pacific Drive is to hold an item. Right-clicking (not in inventory mode) while holding an item drops an item.
  • You can then place the remaining items in another container and pick them up off the floor. This method also helps you split your stack and organize your inventory.

It’s worth noting that inventory management in Pacific Drive can be tricky, and the developers may introduce an easier way to split the stack in a future update. Currently, using storage boxes and holding items is an effective way to split stacks and manage inventory in the game.

Why is splitting the stack important?

In Pacific Drive, split stacking is very important for inventory management. It allows you to control the amount of items you carry, especially when you need to allocate resources or manage vehicle weight.

If you are having trouble splitting stacks in Pacific Drive, try the method above. If these methods don’t work, you may need to wait for a future update or patch that addresses this issue.

The developer of Pacific Drive has not announced any concrete plans to address the stack split. However, they may consider implementing changes in future updates based on player feedback and the changing needs of the game.

Pacific Avenue gameplay

Pacific Drive is a first-person survival game set in the Olympic exclusion zone of the Pacific Northwest in 1998. Players can navigate the area on foot or in a wagon, which can be customized in their garage to serve as a base. Vehicle diagnostics are done using the headset, and repairs such as fixing a flat tire or using a blowtorch can be carried out while traveling, with more complex repairs done in the garage.

The invention station in the garage helps harvest resources and craft machines for various purposes, such as discovering new routes or adding fuel. Weather affects vehicle handling, and players must contend with metal monsters that lock onto their cars, as well as other obstacles such as electrical anomalies. They can find crafting recipes and blueprints to upgrade their vehicles, as well as notes and audio logs to help them escape the area. Players collect power cores to open gates, but doing so causes the world to become more hostile, leading to enemies and destructive storms.

Pacific Drive development and release dates

After working at video game studios such as Sony Online Entertainment, Sucker Punch Productions, and Oculus VR, Alexander Dracott founded Ironwood Studios in Seattle in 2019 to make his own games. The idea for Pacific Drive came to him while driving through the Olympic Peninsula, when he recalled an unforgettable experience driving through the Pacific Northwest as a child in Portland, Oregon. Initially, Delacorte considered working alone at Pacific Drive, but as the concept expanded, he realized he would need a team. He began building the team in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and moved into the Seattle office in 2022.

The team’s goal is to make the player’s relationship with their car a core gameplay element. Lead game designer Seth Rosen emphasized that the car’s health reflects the player’s performance more than the player’s own health. They experimented with scripted “character-building” moments for the vehicles, but found the unscripted gameplay to be more engaging. Rosen avoids frustrating survival game elements like inventory management and resource grinding.

The team designed enemies and events with simple behaviors that combined to create interesting scenarios. They wanted the enemies to be challenging but still allow players to creatively solve problems. Initial attempts at AI-controlled enemies were abandoned because their behavior while driving was too unpredictable. The randomization of the game world was inspired by Derek Yu’s work on Spelunky. Pacific Drive is built on Unreal Engine 4.

“Pacific Drive” was released on September 13, 2022, during PlayStation’s State of Play event, and its first trailer was released. The game was originally planned to release on PlayStation 5 and Windows in 2023, but was delayed to early 2024 to ensure additional development time without overworking the team. A story trailer at the PC Gaming Show in November revealed a release date of February 22, 2024.
