Alone in the Dark gameplay

In Alone in the Dark, players choose between protagonist Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood and find themselves trapped in the eerie Deserto mansion. Combat options include using your fists, feet, and discovering a variety of weapons. Some opponents require puzzle-solving skills, while others are best avoided entirely.

Exploration and puzzle-solving form the core gameplay, encouraging players to search the mansion for clues about its ominous past. The ability to interact with the environment, such as opening and closing doors, manipulating objects, and using key items, can add depth to the experience. The inventory system is determined by weight rather than item count and requires strategic management, with players having to discard items to create space.

Alone in the Dark’s level design provides a partially non-linear experience. Initially limited to the attic and third floor, players progress in a linear sequence until the third floor puzzle is solved to gain access to the first and second floors. This provides the freedom to explore the rooms in any order, with the option to revisit the attic and third floor.

Advance specific puzzles to unlock the caves beneath the mansion, introducing fully linear progression and overcoming unique challenges. The game’s dynamic mix of combat, exploration, and puzzles gives it its lasting appeal.

Alone in the dark plot

In 1924, a man named Jeremy Hartwood, who owned a bizarre mansion in Louisiana called Derceto, committed suicide. People already thought the mansion was haunted. You can play as Edward Carnby, a detective looking for the piano, or Emily Hartwood, Jeremy’s niece who believes the piano holds the secret to his death notes. The game starts with your character heading to a mansion, and once inside, strange things happen, like doors closing and monsters attacking.

As you explore the mansion, you’ll discover that Deserto was built by a mysterious pirate named Ezechiel Pregzt. He performs dark rituals in the caves beneath his house to seek wealth and longevity. The mansion burned down during the Civil War, but Plaguezt’s spirit lives on in a tree beneath the house. Jeremy committed suicide to stop Plaguezt from using his body, and now Plaguezt is hunting you. If you fail the game, Plaguezt will take over your body, causing supernatural terror.

In the alternate ending, you find a way into the cave, throw a lit lantern at Plaguezt’s tree, and escape when the cave collapses. This will destroy the Plaguezt, clearing the house of monsters and allowing you to exit safely. However, there’s a twist at the end of the game – when you get back in the car, you discover that the driver is a zombie, and he takes you back to civilization.

This story is inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft, including books such as Necronomicon and De Vermis Mysteriis, as well as creatures from Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. The character Edward Carnby’s last name is a reference to another character in a Lovecraftian story, and the game’s various supernatural enemies come directly from Lovecraftian stories.
