You play as Anita, searching for her friend Maya in an abandoned apartment complex in a fictional city called Kettenstadt. The game blends modern elements like text messaging with references to real-world events like the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s worth noting that some of the original members of the Silent Hill development team worked on the project, giving it some authenticity.

The game has two main types of gameplay: intense chase sequences (where you have to escape from scary monsters) and exploration sections (where you move around in a first-person perspective). While horror game fans may find the chase sequences familiar, the creature designs are quite creepy.

Silent Hill: Short Message is a promising start to Konami’s return to the series and is definitely worth checking out, especially since PS5 owners can download the game for free from the PlayStation Store.

As Anita explores, she receives a call from another friend, Emily, who reveals that Maya has died by suicide. Anita is confused by writings that appear to be from Maya and discovers Maya’s last artwork on the roof of the villa. Anita tries to imitate Maya and jumps, but wakes up in the villa. Maya tells her that they can’t leave until she finds “it”.

Anita relives her memories and realizes her jealousy of Maya’s friendship with Emily. She learns that Kottenstadt is under an alleged curse and discovers a letter from Maya asking Emily for help. Anita confesses her crime to Emily and jumps again. Back at the villa, Anita recalls her family’s troubled past, with her mother neglecting and abusing her and her brother.

She discovers that Maya planned her artwork, proving that Maya did not ignore her. Anita is chased by the monster one last time, and she stops herself from jumping, dispelling the fog and returning to reality. Later, Emily’s social media posts suggested that both Anita and she had left Kettenstadt to go to college and start over.
