Experimental projects from the previous era

In previous eras, experimental items were special pieces of equipment with unique modifiers called experimental affixes. These affixes are powerful bonuses not found on regular items and can significantly enhance different character builds.

In order to obtain experimental items, players need to defeat a powerful boss enemy in Rune Prison known as the “Exiled Mage”. While experimental items may initially look like standard equipment, upon closer inspection they contain these special additions.

These affixes can provide benefits such as mitigating damage over time, gaining wards on kill, increasing haste, and more. Additionally, defeating an Exiled Mage above level 70 may drop a Research Rune, allowing players to seal experimental add-ons onto experimental items.

This process follows the rules of sealed affixes, and each item can only have one sealed affix. In addition, players can use the Glyph of Insight on a Sealed affix to upgrade it to an Experimental affix, which provides certain crafting results depending on the item. How to use experimental items from the previous era?

Using Experiments in Last Epoch is very simple and involves two main steps. First, players need to obtain experimental items by defeating the Exiled Mage, a mini-boss in the Rune Prisons scattered around the game world.

These Rune Prisons can be encountered randomly during the campaign or Monolith of Destiny encounters. After defeating the Exiled Mage, players will receive at least one experimental item. It’s important to note that the experimental add-ons only apply to gloves, boots, and belts.

Once players acquire an experimental item, they can enhance their gear with its unique affixes. To do this, players can insert Research Runes onto items that contain the experimental affixes they wish to retain.

This process permanently locks the experimental affix to the item, freeing up the affix slot for other modifiers. Additionally, defeating a level 70 or higher Exiled Mage may also yield Research Runes, which can be used to seal experimental affixes.

With the right crafting techniques, including using Glyphs of Insight dropped by Exiled Mages, players can create powerful noble and legendary gear through the strategic application of experimental affixes.
