Metal Slug is a famous Japanese multimedia game series and run-and-gun video game series. It was originally developed by Nazca Corporation, which later merged with SNK in 1996 after the release of the first game in the series. The series has expanded to include various forms of media beyond video games.

The series is centered around action-packed gameplay where players can engage in run-and-shoot mechanics. The original game was created for the Neo-Geo Arcade (MVS) and Neo-Geo Home Console (AES). Over time, these original games have been adapted and made available on different consoles and mobile platforms. Additionally, subsequent entries are designed for a wide range of game systems.

The game’s story revolves around Peregrine Squad, a small but brave team of soldiers. Their main goal is to thwart the plans of various hostile forces such as rebels, aliens, zombies, mummies and other entities aspiring for global domination.

The series has also branched out into spin-off games, exploring different play styles. One example is a third-person shooter developed to commemorate the series’ tenth anniversary. Another spin-off is a tower defense game tailored for mobile platforms.

Metal Slug Awakening Tier List August 2023

The game’s global release featured significant revisions to every aspect of its gameplay, visuals, and art style. The overhaul aims to provide players with an enhanced and updated gaming experience compared to previous iterations.

In the world of mobile gaming, it’s common practice for players to look for certain information when a new action game becomes available on platforms like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. One of the key aspects that players often look for is the game’s weapon and character level lists. This list categorizes weapons and characters in the game based on their effectiveness, power, and usefulness. Players find these tier lists useful because they provide insight into which weapons and characters are considered more powerful or valuable within the game’s mechanics.

As expected, the global release of Metal Slug Awakens has prompted players to start looking for such tier lists. These lists become a valuable resource for both new and experienced players, helping them make informed decisions about which weapons and characters to prioritize and invest in.

This strategic approach can significantly impact a player’s performance and enjoyment of the game as they focus on utilizing the most powerful and efficient tools at their disposal.

metal slug game

The gameplay of the Metal Slug series combines run-and-gun elements with shooting mechanics from subsequent releases. In the run-and-gun session, players will face numerous opponents and obtain powerful weapon enhancements. Unlike many other run-and-gun games, where contact with an enemy causes damage, Metal Slug offers a unique twist.

Once in contact, the player can perform a melee attack, and the enemy can retaliate with a melee attack of their own if capable. Players’ melee attacks are significantly stronger than standard fire, allowing them to efficiently take out multiple enemies at once, or quickly defeat tough foes like the Mummy in Metal Slug 2.

Players start the game with a basic semi-automatic pistol. As the game progresses, they can pick up a variety of weapons, but can only use one at a time. When a new weapon is obtained, it replaces the current weapon. When ammo is depleted, the player reverts to using the pistol, which has an unlimited supply of bullets.

A feature introduced in Metal Slug 6 allows players to carry a pistol along with two other weapons, allowing for more tactical options. In addition, players are equipped with grenades, which deal more damage when thrown at enemies. However, grenade availability is limited and needs to be replenished through ammo found during gameplay.

At the heart of the Metal Slug series is the iconic SV-001, often referred to as “Metal Slug.” The whimsical silver-gray tank, named after the “Super Vehicle,” is equipped with a cannon that fires a limited number of powerful bombs, and twin Vulcan cannons that fire an unlimited number of tracer rounds. The tank can jump and crouch, with crouching enabling the player to throw grenades from the hatch. The grenades are separate from the tank’s artillery ammunition. Ammunition boxes discovered during the game can restore the tank’s bomb supply.

The tank can crush infantry and perform self-destruct maneuvers, with the driver ejecting and the tank colliding with the target, causing an explosion. The tank can withstand three direct hits before being destroyed, ejecting a warning before exploding. The enemy variant of this tank has a shield that must be removed before the vehicle can be shot down.

As the series progressed, vehicle specifications evolved to include any vehicle equipped with a Vulcan cannon as well as vehicle-specific cannon variants customized to suit the environment. Certain vehicles are exclusively equipped with Vulcan cannons (more powerful bullets than pistols), but lack special bomb and armor protection. Notably, Metal Slug 6 introduces the ability of playable character Tarma to lock the Vulcan cannon into place and fire continuously.

“Metal Slug” games usually consist of 6 levels, but there are exceptions, such as “Metal Slug 3”, “Metal Slug 5” and “Metal Slug 6” have 5 levels, and “Metal Slug 7” has 7 levels. In Western versions of the game, blood is often replaced with sweat to censor violence. However, code in the Neo-Geo hardware BIOS allows players to disable this checker, thus revealing the original blood effects. This applies to both the arcade and home versions of the game.
