The background of the game is set in an era when pirates ruled the oceans. But it doesn’t quite feel like history. It’s more of a fantasy version of the late 1600s, known as the Golden Age of Piracy. You will become a pirate, sail your own ship, fight other ships and search for treasure.

You can play Skull and Bones by yourself or with friends. The developers made this game using an engine called Ubisoft Anvil, which makes the game look very cool and realistic. It was also supposed to be available on Google Stadia, but that didn’t happen due to the shutdown of Google Stadia. So if you like adventure games and like pirates and naval battles, keep an eye out for the release of Skull and Bones!

Skull and Bones gameplay

In Skull and Bones, you become a pirate captain, sailing the high seas in search of treasure and glory. You take control of your own pirate ship and can customize it to your liking. Whether you want to sail alone in a single-player adventure or team up with friends for multiplayer battles, the choice is yours.

The game features exciting naval battles where you need to use strategy and skill to defeat your opponents. You can use the positioning of the wind to your advantage in combat, and you’ll encounter various types of enemy ships, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

As you progress, you’ll have the opportunity to collect more ships, each with their own set of weapons and abilities. From fast and agile battleships to powerful frigates armed to the teeth, you need to choose the right ship for the mission.

Skull and Bones also offers a multiplayer mode called Loot Hunt, where you and your team compete against other players to find hidden treasures and claim them for your own. If you want to progress faster, microtransactions are available to help you customize your ship and crew. Get ready to hoist your sails and embark on a Skull and Bones adventure!

Skull and Bone Development

Skull and Bones began its journey as Ubisoft Singapore’s first project in 2013, inspired by the naval battles of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It was originally conceived as an expansion to Black Flag and later as an MMO spin-off, Black Flag Infinite, but technical limitations prompted it to evolve into a standalone venture.

Development encountered significant obstacles, including environmental changes from the Caribbean to Hyperborea and finally settlement in the Indian Ocean. The gameplay went through several revisions, shifting the focus from sea exploration to land-based survival elements influenced by games like Rust. Budget issues and management challenges plagued the project, which cost more than $120 million.

Announced at E3 2017, Skull and Bones faced a series of delays and was originally slated for release in 2018. “New Vision” emerged in September 2020, resulting in more development time and the involvement of other Ubisoft studios such as Ubisoft Berlin. Although there were subsequent delays, including a closed beta in August 2023, the game’s release date was finally set for February 16, 2024, after a series of rescheduled release dates.
